Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are the latest adult teeth, which are molars located at the back of the  jaw.Because they do not adapt to the jaw structure, they usually cause pain, abscess  formation and discomfort in most individuals. These problems occur since there is no  sufficient space in the jaw for wisdom teeth to come out.For this reason, wisdom teeth  mostly must be removed by tooth extraction or dental surgeries. In addition to the severe pain it causes, it may also cause deterioration of the jaw structure and adversely affect  the health of other teeth in its neighborhood. For this reason, when the wisdom teeth  start to come out, it is beneficial to go through a check in consultation with dentists. In  some cases, wisdom teeth may remain embedded in the gingiva because they come out at the wrong angle due to an improper jaw structure and may not be visible when viewed from the outside. These teeth, which are called impacted wisdom teeth, usually reveal  themselves with the pain they cause. In order not to adversely affect the jaw and tooth  structure and to prevent unwanted problems such as abscess, a dentist examination  should be passed regularly. With regular dental examinations, the start and development of wisdom teeth can be followed, and in case of a negative situation, teeth can be  extracted without harming the oral and dental health.

What are the symptoms of Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, which can find enough space in the gums and grow properly, develop in a healthy way and do not cause any discomfort symptoms. However, the wisdom teeth of  most individuals cause problems due to the absence of this area. Common symptoms  seen during the eruption or impacting of wisdom teeth are:

• Pain in teeth and gums

• Gum sensitivity

• Pain that hits the chin and ear

• Swelling in lymph nodes,

• Headache

• Bad breath

• Pain while chewing

Most of the symptoms like above seen in individuals between the ages of 17-25 because of wisdom teeth and its complications. Therefore, individuals experiencing these  complaints should consult a dentist.

How is the wisdom teeth removal performed?

The surgeon usually starts with local anaesthesia and then how the wisdom tooth  surgery will be performed is decided entirely according to the position of the tooth  according to the x-ray images. In cases where the wisdom tooth is in the gum and the  tooth roots are embedded in the jawbone, it is generally not possible to remove the tooth in one piece. In these cases, the wisdom to be extracted is divided into several parts by  the dentist and taken in this way. Another method is to make an incision in the gingiva so that the tooth can be extracted with the help of this incision much more easily. After tooth extraction and cleaning of the area, the gum is stitched. These stitches should be  removed a certain time after the operation. How long the surgery will take under local  anesthesia may vary depending on the position of the tooth and the number of teeth to  be extracted.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Blood leakage in the operation area for a certain period of time is completely normal for  the patients who had wisdom teeth extraction surgery. In order to ensure coagulation in  the operation area, food should not be eaten and water should not be drunk for the  period of time recommended by the surgeon. Swelling may occur in the area after the  operation, and severe pain may develop as the effect of anesthesia decreases. In this  case, it is beneficial to use painkillers prescribed by the dentist. The area where the  tooth was extracted should not be touched with a hand or tongue, and the other side of  the mouth should be used while eating. Smoking should be avoided during the first 24  hours as it will increase bleeding. Ice can be used to relieve swelling.
