What is Vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty, that is, "surgical vaginal tightening" operations are among the important surgeries preferred as much as labiaplasty operations in the field of cosmetic gynecology. Vaginoplasty surgeries are reconstructive surgeries and are performed by gynecologist physicians.

The operations performed to restore the old tightness of the enlarged vagina are called 'vagina tightening surgery' or 'vaginoplasty operation'.

In the medical literature, the organ where sexual intercourse takes place is called the vagina, and the aesthetic operation performed on the vagina is called vaginoplasty.

The average length of the vagina is 8-9 cm.

Why does the vagina enlarge?

The vagina is a structure made up of connective tissue and muscle tissue. The main component of connective tissue is collagen. As a result of reasons such as advancing age, vaginal births, pregnancy, abortion and similar interventions, this connective and muscle tissue may be affected and the vagina may expand.

The most common reason for enlargement is vaginal delivery. Particularly difficult deliveries can cause tears in the muscle and connective tissue of the vagina, causing permanent enlargement of the vagina. On the other hand, an enlargement may occur in the vagina of the person after a vaginal delivery is planned and labor started, but the baby cannot descend to the pelvic roof, and after a cesarean section.

Although it’s said that the most common reason for vaginal enlargement is previous deliveries, complaints related to vaginal enlargement can sometimes be seen in women who have never given birth or even become pregnant. The connective tissue structures of these women are genetically weak and as a result, the elasticity of the connective tissue of the vagina is high. This situation can cause a feeling of loosening and relaxation in the vagina with the effect of getting wet during sexual intercourse.

The vagina, which uses its enlargement feature to the maximum during vaginal delivery, cannot fully return to its original state after delivery. The muscle and connective tissue of the vagina is severely damaged and permanent enlargement occurs in the vagina, especially in difficult-to-intervention births and the history of giving birth to a large baby. Depending on the enlargement, the person begins to have problems in sexual intercourse with himself or his partner. This situation puts the person on a quest to restore his vagina.

Vaginoplasty operations are performed by many gynecologists and are also known as “colporaphy posterior” surgery among gynecological operations. The aim is to narrow the vagina and regain its former tightness.

How is it performed?

In vaginoplasty operations, triangular tissue is removed with incisions made into the vagina, and then narrowing is achieved with transverse sutures. The posterior wall of the vagina is narrowed all the way from the entrance. In some cases, if the muscles are injured and separated, the pelvic muscles under the vaginal canal are also brought closer together to increase the tightness.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

The most common risks (complications) of vaginoplasty include bleeding, infection, bowel (rectum) injuries, pain during intercourse (due to excessive narrowing) or not meeting the desired post-operative expectation.

It should not be forgotten that there is a certain percentage of complications in any surgical procedure. Such complications or dissatisfaction are minimal in the hands of experienced surgeons.

Again, failure to perform the surgery at the desired size may cause the pre-operative complaints and dissatisfaction to continue. In order for the surgery to be as expected, it is necessary to explain in detail what will be done before the surgery and the risks of the surgery.

What kind of problem occurs when the vagina is enlarged?

The enlargement of the vagina over time causes it to not fully grasp the penis during intercourse and as a result, sexual satisfaction cannot be fully achieved. Especially many couples complain that their sexual life is not the same after vaginal delivery.

How narrow can a vagina be with Vaginoplasty?

The wider the vagina, the more it will be narrowed. Therefore, for example; The narrowing of the vagina in a woman who has never given birth and in a woman who has given 5 births will be different. With vaginal tightening operations, the vagina is narrowed both internally and externally.

In some patients with excessive enlargement, an internal narrowing of up to 7-8 cm can be made. In this way, while the length (depth) of the vagina is not reduced, the canal is completely narrowed.

Things to consider after Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a procedure performed under anesthesia and with operating room procedures. Mild pain and bleeding are expected conditions in the postoperative period. With the recommended dressing and regular use of drugs, recovery will also be rapid.

It is not recommended to do heavy exercise and use the pool and sea for the first 1 month after the surgery. Wound healing will be good with regular nutrition, not smoking, plenty of water intake and rest. The first sexual intercourse is usually recommended after 6 weeks of the operation.
